What our project is all about?

The project is about developing a new egg based product for Munax Oy. The product would be innovative, new kind of dessert, that fits the company's image. The developing process consist of product development and packaging design as well as marketing the product.
We will work closely with the company under their guidance, keeping in touch via Whatsapp and weekly meetings. We will also getting to know the company thoroughly and it's manufacture in Laitila.

Market research: snack products

Our PO gave use a assignment to go to stores and look into different product categories as dairy, vegan/vegetarian, protein, oat, soy and snacks. Our job was to do some market research about the price range, location, variation and aesthetics. Also we had to take pictures of interesting finds and find out the market trends.

I looked into snack products. Typically a snack is something easy and small, one can eat between meals and on the go as well.
  • snack bars, cookies, crackers, chips, jerky, popcorn
  • sandwiches, small salads
  • fruits, berries, vegetables
  • nuts, seeds
  • yogurt, pudding, quark
  • smoothie, coffee, cacao drinks
  • sweets, candy

As mentioned snacks as a product category is quite wide so the products are as well all around the store in shelves, cold lockers and different kind of stands.
The prices were of course little different varying from the product. We discussed with our group during this "presentation" about how much we are willing to spend on snacks. We had quite big variation from 2 to 5 euros. 

Almost everyone of us prefer choosing two or more different products for the snack time. Usually we take some kind of sandwich, quark and peanuts or protein bar or similar product. This was interesting to notice that we want different kind of products - not satisfied with one 4 euro product, but two two euro products would be better. So maybe in our project we have to also think about this, is our product that versatile that it is enough alone or should we think it as a part of snack purchase?

Here are some key words I found out from this market research and general insights I have created. Big trend in Finland in many different kinds of business fields is ecological and environment consciousness. So that is in my mind also a trend in the snack business - recyclable packages, domestic products and production, natural production chain and ingredients and so on.

Modern lifestyle can be quite hectic and people are on the rush, so the package and product has to be easy and fast to use - spoon, no need to cook, can eat while on train or walking etc.

One interesting find was in product placement. This quite new Roberts Berrie product had an always open in-store tasting spot. No need for employer and customers can look into the product in peace. Could we use this kind of placement with our new product as well?
